Goalkeeper Daniel Barden has completed a permanent transfer to Stevenage. The 25-year-old Welshman joins as a free agent following the end of his contract at Norwich City.

Barden underwent a trial with the League One side last month, featuring in a pre-season friendly against Colchester United. His performance convinced manager Steve Evans to make the move official. He will compete directly with Filip Marschall for the starting position.

Daniel Barden is a goalkeeper who began his senior career with Norwich City in 2019 after moving from Arsenal's academy. His professional debut came in a Carabao Cup match against Luton Town in September 2020. He made three further appearances that season as Norwich won the Championship title, stepping in due to injuries to senior keepers Tim Krul and Michael McGovern.

His career was then interrupted by a testicular cancer diagnosis in 2021, followed by a serious ACL injury that sidelined him for twelve months. After recovering, he gained experience through loan spells at clubs including Livingston, Maidstone United, Swindon Town, and Dagenham & Redbridge. The move to Broadhall Way represents his first permanent switch at senior level.

Barden arrives to provide immediate competition for the number one shirt. Current first-choice goalkeeper Filip Marschall has been a consistent presence, but the addition creates healthy rivalry. The squad data on our squad page shows Stevenage now has significant depth in the goalkeeping department.

He also reunites with former Norwich teammates Louis Thompson and Saxon Earley, which should aid his integration. His experience in a title-winning environment at Carrow Road could prove valuable for a Stevenage side looking to establish itself in League One.

This signing concludes Stevenage's business for goalkeepers this summer. Manager Steve Evans has emphasized building a competitive squad capable of handling a 46-game league campaign. Barden's arrival on a free transfer represents a low-risk acquisition with potential high reward, given his pedigree and age.

The club's pre-season preparations are now complete, with the focus shifting to the opening league fixture. Supporters can view the full schedule on our fixtures page. Barden's signing completes the club's fifth major addition of the summer window. His journey from overcoming significant health challenges to securing a permanent move to a League One club adds a compelling narrative to Stevenage's new season.
