Stevenage were knocked out of the Carabao Cup after a 3-0 home defeat to Reading this week. The League One side's cup run ended at the first hurdle as the visitors secured a comfortable victory to advance.
Reading's performance was analysed in player ratings, with reporter Harry grading the Royals after what he called "a cushty win sent them through to the next round of the Carabao Cup." The average rating for the Reading side was 6.63 out of 10. For Stevenage, the result adds to a difficult start to the 2026-27 campaign, where they currently sit 19th in League One with just one point from their opening two games.
Reading's back line was key to the clean sheet at Stevenage. Goalkeeper Pereira was a surprise starter, given that Jack Stevens usually keeps goal in early cup rounds. Pereira had a shaky start to the season by his own standards and did not make a notable save until late in the match.
The centre-back pairing delivered a solid foundation. Conor Masterson, making his debut after earning a contract, received a 7 out of 10. He was calm and confident, defending his box very well and making vital interceptions in the second half. Manager Leam Richardson values defenders who excel in that area. Alongside him, Benn Ward played at centre-back and earned a 6. He had a solid game, was hardly noticed, and did not put a foot wrong. Ward has now been part of a defence with back-to-back clean sheets.
Ashqar Ahmed was another standout, also receiving a 7. The defender, who was rushed into the first team early last season, looked better for time out of the spotlight. He kept a clean sheet and looked a real handful . "If he can keep developing the way he is we’ve got a hell of a player on our hands," Harry said of Ahmed. Jeriel Dorsett, another centre-back, was rated a 6 but looks low on confidence.
The result provides a positive moment for Reading amidst Stevenage's broader struggles. Steve Evans's team has conceded three goals while scoring only two so far this season, leaving them with a negative goal difference. They are already five points behind early leaders Bradford City in the League One title race.
Attention now turns swiftly back to league action. Stevenage's next fixture is a key home game against Doncaster Rovers on 29 August 2026. Doncaster are currently 20th in the table, making it a key early-season encounter near the bottom.
The team will need to find more attacking threat, with top scorer O. Sanderson having netted just once in two appearances this term. Improving that output is essential as they look to climb from 19th place in the standings. The cup exit allows for full focus on securing a first league win of the season this weekend.
