On this day in 2024, major works to improve safety and visibility at a junction near Stevenage were completed. Herts Highways had initiated significant improvements at the junction of B197 Graveley Road and North Road in January. The upgrades included the installation of traffic lights on all three sides, along with pedestrian crossing provisions across North Road. At the time, a spokesperson for Herts Highways explained: 'This was a Road Safety Scheme to address a long-standing issue with collisions, and we've redesigned the junction to improve safety and visibility for all users.' High friction road surfacing was also laid on the North Road approach to enhance skid resistance. New lighting was installed at the T junction, connecting with existing columns at the A1(M) Junction 8 roundabout and in Graveley village, ensuring that the illumination reached both the footway and the road to improve visibility. Existing signage was also repaired and cleaned, while vegetation that had narrowed the footpath was cleared, with the footpath repaved and resurfaced where necessary. The Herts Highways spokesperson added: 'We'll monitor the junction and expect the new scheme will make a big difference to the safety of the junction for all road users.'
