Stevenage have completed the permanent signing of Burnley striker Michael Mellon for an undisclosed fee. The 22-year-old forward joins after scoring 10 goals in 18 appearances for Oldham Athletic last season, including two hat-tricks. Mellon has signed a three-year deal at the League One club, which finished 6th in the 2025 table with 75 points from 46 games (21W-12D-13L).
Who is Michael Mellon?
Mellon spent six years with Burnley, making a name for himself during loan spells at Morecambe, Dundee and Bradford City. His most successful loan came at Oldham, where he was the club's top scorer despite an injury-shortened campaign. The striker is the son of Oldham manager Michael Mellon, who would have liked to keep him but couldn't match Burnley's asking price.
Why Stevenage?
Stevenage manager Alex Revell sees Mellon as a key addition to strengthen the attack. The club scored 49 goals last season but conceded 46, finishing 28 points behind leaders Lincoln. Mellon's arrival comes after a poor run of form, with Stevenage losing their last four matches (LLLLW) and ending the 2025 season with a 2-0 defeat to Stockport County on 13 May 2026.
What's next for Mellon?
Mellon will look to make an immediate impact at Stevenage, who open their 2026-27 campaign at home to Oxford United on 22 August. The striker will hope to help improve Stevenage's goal difference and push for a playoff spot after narrowly missing out last season.
