Stevenage FC's alumni team emerged victorious in the inaugural Scholar Alumni tournament, defeating Arsenal and Cambridge United Scholars. The tournament was held in memory of former Stevenage Scholar George Casey. The event was a huge success, with stories being shared and football played in good spirit. Each side played each other twice to determine which two sides would contest the final. Stevenage FC drew against the Arsenal side, but the Gunners Alumni employed the tactics of attack being the best form of defence and defeated Cambridge 3-2. The second round of games saw a number of differences, with Stevenage FC defeating Arsenal with a 6-2 scoreline. The end result remained the same as Arsenal won by two goals to one. The maths were now simple, whoever won between United and Boro' would be in the final with Arsenal. It wasn't to be for United as Boro; put on a show with the biggest scoreline of the tournament. Nigel Neita saw his appeals for a penalty flatly turned down by the referee and he took it personally, as no more than sixty seconds later he regained possession of the ball and fired it into the net with venom. Boro' replied immediately through Legacy Number 22 - Jamie Carey-Morrell. It was all the more important as Arsenal had squandered the opportunity to level moments earlier from the penalty spot, thanks to a strong hand from Legacy Number 42 - Ryan Schmid. He could do nothing about Arsenal's second goal, which was again from the impressive Neita. It was too late to inspire a comeback though as the final whistle blew. The brainchild of Stevenage's own Glenn Quirke, Arsenal's Chantelle Reid and Player Care Manager at Cambridge United, Callum Langley, the first ever Alumni Trophy was ready to be presented. It was overseen by Stevenage Academy Director Jorden Gibson, who said that one of the key reasons for introducing this tournament was “aftercare”. The line often rings out, “once Boro' always Boro' ” and the same would ring true for Arsenal and Cambridge, but maintaining links with the scholars is something that many top tier sides already do, with the likes of Cambridge and Stevenage leading the way amongst the clubs outside of the Premier League. And so the players got ready to lift their hard earned trophy. Only, they didn’t do that. Instead, the group invited the family of George Casey onto the pitch and gave them the trophy “for their brother.” Because it really seems that that is what these boys, and now men, become. The family said afterwards “George always said
