Stevenage, the League Two side, has seen a significant boost in popularity thanks to their clever marketing ploy with Burger King. The fast-food chain's decision to become the front-of-shirt sponsor for Stevenage in 2018 has paid off, with their logo appearing in the EA Sports game FIFA. This move allowed Burger King to reach a wider audience, with over 25,000 goals scored by Stevenage posted online. The club's jerseys sold out for the first time in their history, and they have become the most used team in FIFA's career mode. Stevenage's manager and players, including those who have been signed by gamers, such as Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah, have all contributed to the team's success. According to a Burger King spokesperson, the company realized that sponsoring Stevenage would give them exposure in the video game, even if the team was at the bottom of England's fourth division. The spokesperson said, 'You haven’t heard of Stevenage Football Club, right? Well, neither had we, but we realised that even though they’re at the bottom of England’s fourth division, they were going to be in the same video game that all the expensive players were going to be in.' The company created The Stevenage Challenge, which encouraged gamers to play with the club, sign big-name players, and share their success on social media. The challenge was a huge success, with gamers around the world participating and sharing their experiences online. Stevenage has begun the new season with one win and one draw from their first two league games, and they continue to have the Burger King logo on the front of their shirts. The team is lucky to still be in League Two after finishing 23rd out of 24 teams last season and only avoided relegation after Bury's expulsion from League One meant just bottom-side Macclesfield Town dropped down to the National League.
